Due to trips overseas by Bill Ryan of Pacific Fast Mail and Zev Goldberg of Gem Models, plus a visit to this country by Eiichi of Akane Models, things seem to be looking up for continuing improvement of imported models, These three seem to be anxious to beat each other on quality, and there's equal improvement on some other lines we've seen. Don't forget that what you buy in this hobby is a vote for what you want. | IN THE NEWS... Akane is an old Japanese name pronounced "Ah-kah-neh," and it is the name of the manufacturing company in the suburbs west of Tokyo headed by Sekino-san, whose thumbnail biography we published in one of our 1961 Bull Session columns. Sekino-san started by making models with okusan (his wife) on the kitchen table in the years after World War II. His first customers were GI's from nearby military bases. Later he sold HO scale models to International Models and still later to Akane Models, an American importing firm using the Japanese firm's name. Now another shift has been announced to us by Zev Goldberg of Gem Models. He says that what has been the Akane line - in fact, all production from Sekino - will be sold by Gem. The name Fuji Models will be used on the former Akane line to avoid any domestic conflict with the U. S. firm named Akane. Another important change is that the models will be sold from Gem direct to dealers rather than through warehousemen. This is a trend showing in several other special areas of model railroad merchandising. Gem will continue to handle products from its other sources, including Olympia. Gem will use the name Seiko Models for certain once-only production runs, and the name Imperial Models for deluxe model runs of 100 or less. Among the new toolings from Imperial are an HO deluxe AC-9 Southern Pacific articulated, "the cab-forward engine with the cab back in the proper place." | The love of beauty in Japan creates many a delightful scene in ordinary places. This is a garden along the street in front of the factory where Akane models are manufactured. Man with cigar and family is Eiichi Sekino San (the San merely means Mister), the model hobbyist who developed the company. In Japan nearly all work is done with simple tools in small shops with one to twenty or so craftsmen. One shop may make pilots, another frames, another drivers, another motors or only ports of motors. Then the various nearly handmade parts are sent to a central shop, like Akane, where they are assembled into completed models. This shop employs 80 people and is located about 40 miles, by narrow-gauge railroad, from the center of Tokyo. Next to Sekino in the photo is his wife Sumie - who can run the business when Sekino is away but won't admit it - Mechiko [sic], 13, and Sachiko, 10. All are learning English. Sekino reads English very well but because he is not so frequently in contact with Americans, pronunciation comes more slowly. Sekino is an archeologist and anthropologist by profession and has another hobby of raising fighting dogs. He began building railroad models for GI's who were stationed in Japan after World War II. He worked in O scale, later HO, gradually learning how locomotives wore built by adding volumes to his reference library. Most of the workers are young (16 and 17 years old); they come from farms and are trained at the factory. Some live there. One problem is keeping them when electronics and other industries are expanding so rapidly. Locomotives are first made in a pilot model with all handmade parts. These models are sent to the American importer for criticism, after which tools are made up for production. Besides handwork, some machinery is used. In Sekino's shop there is equipment for stamping, coining, turning, and screw machine production. Fifty to 500 locomotives arc made in a lot, with older employees doing the more intricate ports of the work. Recently Sekino toured this country with Sol Kramer, stopping by the MR offices and also visiting a number of home and club model railroads.
