Commencing operations in 1869 as the Shenango & Allegheny Railroad, the Bessemer and Lake Erie grew from humble beginnings to become U.S. Steel's lifeline between the Great Lakes and its Pittsburgh district mills. Recognized for a superb physical plant, which at one time supported a tonnage density per track-mile greater than any other Class I railroad, the Bessemer has earned a reputation as one of the nation's premier regional carriers of heavy freight. Today, as a key component of the Transtar, Inc., group of transportation companies, the B&LE continues its tradition as a hauler of coal, iron ore, and other steel-related commodities.
This book, consisting of more than 200 color photographs, takes us on a tour of the Bessemer, presenting a mix of historical perspectives and contemporary action. We'll see first- and second-generation diesels, resplendent in the B&LE's striking orange-and-black livery, as they pull (and push!) a parade of heavy tonnage. We'll also catch a glimpse of B&LE steam in its twilight years. Our tour will follow the Bessemer from the Lake Erie harbor at Conneaut, Ohio, southward across the rolling countryside of beautiful northwestern Pennsylvania, down through the coal mining districts, over the majestic Allegheny River Bridge, and into North Bessemer Yard on the fringes of the Steel City. We'll explore several branch lines as well, including the Western Allegheny --once noted for its long-lived B&LE F-units.
Climb aboard for a "photo-excursion" celebrating the Silver Centennial (125th Anniversary) of the Bessemer and Lake Erie -- a truly remarkable railroad.
