【YouTube】Jay Gould's Daughter (country song) Pete Seeger

Jay Gould was a 19th-century tycoon who gained control of the UP, MoPac and DRGW railroads and is generally known as a ruthless capitalist and "robber baron." A hobo sings about how Gould's daughter made a selfish request of her father on her deathbed. This song was originally a traditional folk song collected by American folklorist Alan Lomax and others (?). It became a quintessential American railroad folk song after being performed in 1957 by Pete Seeger, who is known as the "father of American folk music." It should be noted that the "blinds" mentioned in the lyrics refer to the diaphragm−a feature that did not exist in the 19th century.

It is worth noting that Japanese men of letters during the Meiji era spoke admiringly of his story of rising to success−even after learning of the bad reputation he had earned abroad.
